Practice kindness

Everyday omoiyari in Australia

Realistic situations and simple actions we can all practise, starting today.

01

On the bus or train

Offer a seat to someone who needs it; make room for mobility aids; keep noise at a considerate level.

02

At a hospital or clinic

Recognise that staff may be under pressure. Ask clear questions, express concerns calmly, and thank those helping you.

03

When speaking with a teacher

Raise a concern about your child privately and respectfully. Listen to the explanation before deciding what to do next.

04

When you disagree with a politician

Challenge the policy, vote, organise or protest peacefully — without threats, harassment or attacks on a person’s family.

05

With paramedics and first responders

Give responders space to work, follow safety directions and avoid filming someone’s worst moment for entertainment.

06

At the shops

Let someone with a small purchase go ahead when appropriate; return your trolley; be patient with a trainee cashier.

07

At work

Check on an overwhelmed colleague, share credit and ask what practical support would help.

08

Online

Read before reacting. Check the facts, avoid pile-ons and challenge ideas rather than humiliating people.

09

With neighbours

Keep shared spaces tidy, consider noise, and offer help to an older neighbour during extreme weather.

10

At community sport

Encourage junior players and volunteers; disagree with referees without abuse.

11

In a café

Respect staff when service is delayed; offer a genuine compliment or a simple thank you.

12

With someone isolated

Invite them to join a conversation or community activity without pressuring them.

The seven-day kindness challenge

Each day, notice one need, make one considerate choice, and reflect on its impact. Kindness need not be expensive or public.
